Drumming Circles offer a wide range of benefits, including stress reduction, improved mood, enhanced social connection, and even physical and cognitive improvements. They provide a fun and engaging way to improve overall well-being. Learning to drum and participating in a group setting can boost self-esteem and confidence.
So what is a drumming circle?
Somebody usually has to organise, venue etc., but the sessions themselves are very much up to the participants, things to try, let’s have a go at this…. Where possible some instruction is aslo included. YouTube is great resource for drumming circle ideas.

Generally hand drums are used, conga, djembe, bongo, cajon and others. Unless there is a specific reason, drum sticks are not generally recommended as they tend to overpower the group sound, but they could have their place.
There may also be opportunities for group public performances in the future, who knows?
What to do?
We've initially secured one of the community studio rooms at the Jamie Brough Pavilion on Papplewick Green, Hucknall. Thursday evenings, from 6:30 - 8:00pm (ish). The general idea is not to worry if someone can't make the full session, they just join in when you can, no pressure, this is fun, remember. Under 16's would need to be accompanied by an adult. This is for a trial 10 week period to the
Don't have a drum?
We have a few bits and bobs, tambourines and shaky/rattly things available to loan for the evening, but you can always bang your feet or clap whilst deciding whether to buy your own.
Can You Help?
The group picture is from our first week where the fabulous Ralf from the Beeston Community Drumming Circle helped out, even bringing along the drums, but due to other commitments this may not be possible in the future.
Our second week saw us following some of Ralf’s teachings along with suggestions from YouTube and Carolyn, a friendly music teacher.
Our third week turned out to be a bit of a free for all. Starting with few rhythms, then Nev’s rendition of Cozy Powell’s “Dance with the Devil” was interesting but the contribution from Helen suggesting we drum along to some popular songs kept us smiling for the rest of the evening.
Basically, we’re still looking for someone to take on the Drumming Circle under the HUGs banner (HUGs Community Drumming Circle) and continue past the 10 weeks trial period. After that, there may be some costs involved, room hire etc. which could be recouped by a small session fee.
As an extra benefit, HUGs (Hucknall Ukulele Group) have a huge community following and perform at venues across Nottinghamshire, sometimes beyond. If the Drumming Circle gets going, we’re confident that it could be included at the festivals we attend, but we’ll see how we get on.
We have a Jambe (big drum thing) but loads of rattly and bangy things you can use for the night. Currently we are having great fun making stuff up but not sure a serious Drumming Circle aficionado would approve. As we don’t have one, we’re not sure it matters.
HISTORY: After meeting and seeing videos of the Beeston Community Drumming Circle, one of our Uke members said they could, and would like to run something like this in Hucknall. We checked our group insurances, found a great venue (Jamie Brough Pavilion, Papplewick Green) got some sponsorship so we could run 10 weeks of free introductory sessions, and off we go, or so we thought. Unfortunately, circumstances have left us with no one to “lead” the group.
